Mark Bryant
The most important member of the team is the client. It is they who understands the site, brief, budget and their aspirations. I believe that it is necessary to listen: "you can't learn while you're talking!" Of course, we have a lot to offer: experience, analysis, understanding of precedents and regulations etc. and our own preconceptions. However, we can only create a worthy response if we understand the client.
My preconceptions are simple: I believe that a building concept is only relevant if it can be understood, without explanation. Also, it doesn't matter how attractive a building looks - if it doesn't function well, it has failed. For these reasons I still find the work of Ralph Erskine relevant.
